In
May 1851 the eyes of the world were fixed on the Flying Cloud, the
largest merchant ship afloat at the time. On her first trip from
New York to California arrived just after 89 days and 21 hours.
This record has never been surpassed by any sailing ship and only
twice equalled, once by the Flying Cloud herself.
